Whenever we meet people around the world and tell them about Villa X one of the most common questions is: Why did you choose Morocco?
We always knew that we wanted to create our own home away from home somewhere in the world and honestly that home could be many places. But we are so happy we ended up in Morocco!
Having been to many corners of the world we absolutely love most parts of it and we can’t lie – we have wanted to settle down in a place or 10 including Australia’s big cities and nature, South Africas wildlife and adventure, Brazils culture and people and the list goes on…
But Morocco honestly has a very special vibe...
We all came to Morocco without really knowing too much about it. It was warm, cheap, not too far from Denmark and directly south, which means no jetlag – perfect!
Morocco is North Africa, it’s Berber culture, it’s dessert, its bubbling cities and lush valleys in the mountains. But our favorite thing about Morocco is the people!
There is nothing better than waking up to the call to prayer, packing up the cars after a great meal of msmen and amlou and nosnos (meaning halfhalf - half coffee, half milk) – and drive up the coast in seach of beautiful beaches, perfect waves or a hidden ancient town. The contrast is striking: The green/blue Atlantic ocean with the blue fishing boats on one side down the cliff and then big mountains with the argan trees, rocks and goats or camels to the other. We can never get tired of exploring here.
In our little village here is a perfect mix of local Moroccan culture and that laid back surfer vibe we know from our favorite surf towns all over the world. Everybody knows everybody and it is just about impossible to walk down to the local bakery without greeting friends along the whole way.
We have come to know and love the sound of Morocco as well. Driving around you will hear how popular the horn is, and the loud shouts of Yallah! To get things moving. You will hear the nut man on the beach shouting about the nuts he sells. You will hear the call to prayer all over the village from the mosque. You will hear gnawa music in cafes and from people’s houses. On a normal night our friends will sing and clap along to the music or pull out a drum or guitar!
The taste of Morocco is like nothing else too. There is a reason Moroccan spices are famous around the world. Couscous, tagine, pastillas, berber omelets, kefta you name it – we love it. And of course all the sweet mint tea you can imagine, mmmm!
And then our Moroccan friends and neighbors. Nowhere else have we felt so welcomed. Everyone here shares whatever they have, help where they can and have such gratitude to the world and nature. It makes you feel the same! We feel very safe and supported here in our little local community – and we love to share it with everyone who comes here. Give our small tips and favorite spots away!
